The Heartbeat of a City
I attended the Woophoria event the other night at the Beechwood and it was so much fun to see all of the arts & culture organizations, as well as the businesses coming together for an event. A man from Sturbridge Village was there in a top hat and tails, there was a valiant knight from the Higgins Armory Museum, and the Ecotarium was sporting a tiny owl and a hedgehog - LIVE! The Beechwood provided food, of course, and it was just so much fun to see a sampling of the great cultural activities that Worcester has to offer!
There are times that we forget how important arts & cultural organizations are to a city. We may not be the large industrial and corporate businesses, but we are certainly the heartbeat of a city. We are the reason people visit a city - the reason people want to live in a city. We define a city. Imagine NY City without theatres and museums and music. Not very exciting is it? Arts & Cultural organizations are a vital part of any city's economy and, in order for a city to thrive, it must make sure that its creative economy is also thriving.
Take a moment this weekend to notice the difference arts & culture makes in your towns and neighbrhoods. When you have the chance, thank the artists and the arts adminstrators for their tireless efforts to make sure your creative economy is thriving. Most importantly, go to a show, a concert, or exhibit and make sure that, when you are feeling generous, to support the arts!
