Winners of 2011 Scholarships Announced!

The Music Guild Prize won by 12-year-old Westborough Mill Pond Elem. School student cellist Zlatomir Fung. The Sylvia Gafvert Stubblebine Scholarship prizes were won by clarinet player Felix Chen, age 15, of Shrewsbury, Oboe player Lydia Consilvio, age 17, of Auburn, for the 2nd year in a row, and Cynthia Schilling, age 17, of Fitchburg, a pianist and previous prize winner.

2011 Young Artist Scholarship Recipient, Felix Chen

The Annual Competition for Young Artists is typically held every May, at the Alden Memorial Hall, Worcester Polytechnic Institute campus in Worcester.  This year the competition will be on Wednesday, May 4th.  Each Spring Music Worcester, Inc. administers the Young Artist Competition.  Prizes are given by The Music Guild (first prize) and the Sylvia Gafvert Stubblebine Scholarship Awards from the Greater Worcester Community Foundation. Performance opportunities come with the monetary prizes.  First Prize Guild winner is invited to perform at the Annual Spring Luncheon of the Music Guild.  Awards may be used by the winning student musicians for lessons, equipment, summer studies, college.  It is our very great pleasure and honor to be part of the continuing mission to foster young musicians.

Competition Rules

  1. Competition is open to talented student instrumental musicians, recommended by their music teacher, aged 12-18, and residents of Worcester County.
  2. Applicant Form must be signed and postmarked no later than April 15, 2011.  Applications are now closed 5/18/2011.
  3. Applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from the student's music teacher.
  4. Applicants may enter to perform on any orchestral instrument, including piano.
  5. Applicants must perform from the standard classical repertoire, 5-7 minutes in duration maximum.  Students must provide their own accompanist if needed and bring 3 copies of their music for the judges.

     Please Note:  Accompanists should be at or above the skill level of the performer.  Please do not perform a work that calls for accompanist without one.  Pianists: please no concerto movements (no 2nd piano available).  Music should be original to the instrument; no transcriptions.

  • First Prize: $1,100 - The Music Guild Award - and performance as soloist at the Music Guild’s Showcase for Young Artists Luncheon in May, as well as other performance opportunities.
  • The Sylvia Gafvert Stubblebine Scholarship Awards, from The Greater Worcester Community Foundation:   Three levels of prizes.  1st: $900, 2nd: $650, 3rd: $450.  Performance opportunities at Music Worcester’s Annual Meeting or other special events at the discretion of Music Worcester.
