2011 Music Worcester Young Artist Competition Date Set for May 4th
The Young Artist Competition is open to highly talented student musicians aged 12 to 18 years old from Worcester County communities. Students should be considered eligible by their music teacher and provide a referral letter with the application. Applicants must perform a work of standard classical repertoire, 5-7 minutes maximum duration, on an orchestral instrument or piano. Applications are available to download from the Music Worcester web site from the Young Artist Scholarship page.
- Please note: Consider your choice of accompanist carefully in order that they are of the same or higher skill level, so that it does not adversely impact your score. Please do not attempt to perform a piece that calls for an accompanist without one – this too would lower your score. Music should be original for the instrument; no transcriptions. Pianists please no concerto movements.
- Application form must be signed and postmarked no later than April 15, 2011
- The competition will begin at 2 p.m. on WEDNESDAY, MAY 4, 2011. Applicants will be notified of their specific reporting time. Applicants may request specific timeframe (10 minute intervals) and we will do our best to accommodate as much as possible on a first come basis. If the number of applicants is too high to comfortably fit in one day, a second day of competition may be scheduled for May 5th and applicants will be notified which day to attend.
- First Prize is $1,100 from the Music Guild and a solo performance opportunity in late May at the Music Guild Showcase for Young Artists Luncheon
- Three additional Sylvia Gafvert Stubblebine Scholarship Prizes, amounts to be determined, made available from the Greater Worcester Community Foundation. Other performance opportunities at the Music Worcester Annual Meeting and other special events, including with the WPI Orchestra at one of their concerts.
- The Competition is held at Alden Memorial Hall, lower level, Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
