On Saturday, April 10th, crowds of people filled the usually desolate Goat’s Head Restaurant. The Goat’s Head appetizers that notoriously fail to draw crowds were lowered to half price for this special occasion. What is it that could entice people to actually enter the Goat’s Head, you might ask? Phi Sig Stock!
Phi Sig Stock is an annual concert put on by Phi Sigma Kappa and Phi Sigma Sigma to benefit Music Worcester. Every year a handful of bands come to campus and play. Entrance is free for students, but donations are collected during the performance. This year, Phi Sigma Kappa and Phi Sigma Sigma spent two weeks table sitting and managed to raise over three hundred dollars for Music Worcester.
Phi Sig Stock had a full line up, with very little down time between bands. The concert, which started promptly at 8 pm, went just past the Goat’s Head’s usual closing time of 11 pm. The bands came from a variety of backgrounds too, including some punk, ska, and rock. “My favorite part was when the second band broke out Rage Against The Machine,” recounted Brian Renda, a graduating senior from Phi Sigma Kappa. “It was so awesome it made my eyes bleed zombies.” A few bands from WPI played, including Larry and the Lobsters, and Second Class Citizens, a band that includes a Phi Sigma Kappa brother and his friends from his hometown. “Alex Bean’s band, Second Class Citizens, was awesome,” said Artem Kutikov ‘10. “They rocked.”
While the event was thrown to raise money for an organization seeking to unite Worcester through music, it also helped unite WPI. The Goat’s Head is slowly becoming a respectable venue for local musicians to come play. If events like Phi Sig Stock continue to be successful, we will soon see students crowding into the Goat’s Head more often to listen to good music and enjoy a few appetizers.
