The Library of Congress is the treasure house of American and international creativity located in the splendidly restored Thomas Jefferson Building with its dazzling murals, marble mosaics, breathtaking paintings and countless sculptures. This was the magnificent setting for a gala celebration we attended May 22, 23 and 24, 2000 highlighting the Local Legacies Project.

Local Legacies is the cornerstone of the Library of Congress Bicentennial Celebration, an unprecedented collaboration of Congress, the Library and 1,300 participants representing distinctive cultural traditions from throughout the nation. The project was designed to document and honor the nation’s rich cultural heritage. Our own national recognition came through U.S. Representative James P. McGovern who selected our 141-year-old Worcester Music Festival to represent the 3rd Congressional District. We are deeply grateful to him for this once-in-a-lifetime honor of having our Music Festival’s history catalogued and preserved for future generations.
