2008 Young Artist Competition

Presented by The Music Guild and Music Worcester, Inc.

  • First Prize: Music Guild Award and performance as soloist at the Music Guild’s Showcase for Young Artists Luncheon in May.
  • Additional Prizes: Scholarship award and performance as soloist at Music Worcester’s Annual Meeting or other special events at the discretion of Music Worcester.

Scholarship awards range from $1,100 to $500 and include the Music Guild Award and Sylvia Gafvert Stubblebine Scholarships.

The Competition is open to highly talented student musicians, ages 12 to 18, that are Worcester County residents, and considered eligible by their music teacher. Applicants must perform a movement from a concerto or a work from the standard classical repertoire, 5-7 minutes in duration, on an orchestral instrument or piano. Students must provide their own accompanist, if needed.

  • Loukia S. Bitzas - Retired Director of Music/Art, Worcester Public Schools
  • Charlotte Baum Zax - Pianist; private piano teacher, recitalist/soloist with chamber groups
  • Douglas G. Weeks - Professor of Music, Worcester Polytechnic Institute
